Today I read Psalms 106 where the Psalmist continues his musing on the history of the Israelites and God's treatment of them. I was struck how the Israelites mixed with the heathen when they crossed over into Israel and got lost in idol worship. This to me seems ridiculous. To bow down to a graven image when you KNOW that your God is real and gives miracle after miracle is just downright dumb. However, as soon as I thought this, I thought about President Spencer W. Kimball's talk about modern day idol worship and how anything that takes us away from worshiping God is an idol. In our day and age I see several idols among Americans including in no particular order: sports, video games, movies or TV, cars, consumerism or shopping and yard work. I have noticed that these particular activities tend to become all consuming to people.
Now, you may notice that one of those activities, yard work, is actually a good healthy activity. However, there are many who take it to extremes and turn a virtue into a vice and can become idol worship if it keeps us from doing the Lord's work in the right way. It is so easy to fall into that trap and we have to make sure when it comes time to do the work of the Lord, we have to put aside whatever things we are doing, be they good or otherwise, and focus on the Lord's work. That is the most important. Until tomorrow.
