In Order to Keep the Commandments, We have to Know What They Are

Today I read Nehemiah 7 and 8.  Chapter 7 is mostly the genealogy of those who came to rebuild Jerusalem.  Chapter 8 however is where Ezra reads the Law of Moses to the people and educates them on the sacrifices and ordinances that are required of them.  It reminds me of Nephi and his father Lehi.  When they left and went into the wilderness they had to go back and get the brass plates because they knew if they did not have them, their descendants could not obey the law, because they would not have it.  Likewise Nehemiah and Ezra are making sure that the people know what the Lord expects of them and what they need to do in order to please Him.  Joseph Smith taught that it is impossible to please God without a proper understanding of His character.  When we have that, we can have perfect faith in Him and can please Him by obeying His commandments.  But we have to first know what they are.  And that is what Ezra did for his people.  Until tomorrow.
