Laws Regarding Murderers

Today I read Numbers 35 which outlines the inheritance of cities for the Israelites.  We talked about inheritance yesterday and so I don't really want to bring it up again today, but I'm sure the Israelites were very excited to find out what cities were going to be theirs.  Just like children excited on Christmas morning to know what presents are theirs, the Israelites were probably salivating to find out where their new home is.  These men and women have spent the vast majority of their lives without a permanent home the idea of having something to call their own is probably very exciting indeed!

This chapter also outlines punishments for murderers.  It's very strange to me, they outline all the various implements of murder that a murderer can use to kill someone.  For the life of me I don't know why God would need to be that specific in the many ways to kill another person.  Especially when the punishment is the same no matter what way the crime is committed.  In order for the repentance process to be completed for a murderer, the person must die.  It is really a mercy for them, not just a safety precaution for the community.

You can easily tell how much the Lord cared for the children of Israel through these chapters.  He spells it out so wonderfuly exactly how to handle all the situations that come up.  He wants things to go as smoothly as possible for the Israelites because He loves them.  Just like He loves us in our day and wants us to be happy too.  If we will only listen to Him, we will have the best possible chance at true happiness.  Until tomorrow.
