Today I read Deuteronomy 4 where Moses reminded the Israelites about their covenants they have made with God and of all the wonderful things that God has done for them throughout their journeys. He reminds them that they had heard the voice of God and seen multiple manifestations of His power.
I almost feel sorry for the Israelites really. They had so many evidences of God's power and majesty that they became completely desensitized to God. That is never a good thing. President Kimball once said that anytime he starts to feel that His relationship with God is becoming too casual he would immerse himself in a study of the Book of Mormon. If a prophet of God can become too casual with God, I'm sure we can too. It begs the question though, what is does it mean to become too casual?
I am reminded of the movie, Fiddler on the Roof. The main character in that movie, Tevye, seems to keep a running dialogue going with God. I honestly think this is a wonderful method of communicating with God and keeping our relationship open and honest. However, such a stance does seem to breed familiarity. While God is our Father and He loves us, we do need to respect Him and make sure that we give Him the proper respect. This is why we use prayer language and worship Him in songs, the hymns. But He loves us and wants us to be happy, this is why we follow His commandments and do what He asks of us. When we follow His teachings, we have the best possible chance of a happy life. Why would we do anything else? Until tomorrow.
