Beware of False Gods

Today I read Deuteronomy 13 where God tells the Israelites how to handle idolatry and those that try and get them to go and worship other gods.  I have often wondered just what in the world the Israelites found so appealing about the gods of other nations?  I mean they don't perform any miracles, they have no witness from those supposed gods, what was the attraction for them?  Why were they constantly going off and worshiping them?

I don't know for a fact, but I have heard from various sources that with at least some of them the worship rites of those false gods involved sex and that would of course entice men at least to their worship.  It must be something along those lines though because the Israelites know that their God is real.  They have seen Him provide manna for them for forty years.  They have seen their clothes grow with them for forty years.  They saw the Red Sea part for them and they walked across on dry land.  What do those false gods do that would pull them away from what they know to be real?

I will say that Satan does have power.  He has the ability to do some things that would in fact seem miraculous and he is good at what he does.  He has had thousands of years to perfect his craft and how he tries to pull us over to him.  If we are not careful then we will fall.  We have to always remain vigilant and do what is expected of us if we hope to conquer Satan and be better than he is.  We must do all those primary answers that we are always talking about, reading scriptures, saying our prayers, going to the temple often, attending our church meetings, those are the things that will keep us strong.  And we need all the help we can get!  Until tomorrow.
